In case there is ANYONE in Second Life™ that doesn’t know what Copybot Viewers are, they are viewers made from the open source viewers, Linden and third-party, that have been altered to ignore Permissions. A person can use them to download ANYTHING ANYTHING in Second Life. There are hot issues in SL that carry loads of emotional energy. The issue of content theft, copyboting, is one of them. At the last Content Creation UG meeting the subject of content theft, what the Lab does about it, and what CAN be done about it came up. It was a surprisingly calm and somewhat intelligent conversation. Second Life – Copybot Viewer Debate. 2017/07/03 by Nalates Urriah. In case there is ANYONE in Second Life™ that doesn’t know what Copybot Viewers are. Still, the resident thief really annoyed me. Listen/watch the video. ![]() (60+ minutes) There are time marks for the various topics in the index below (last page) if you want to find just the juicy parts. This video is from the last few minutes of Content Creation UG meeting of June 27, 2017. It then contuse for another 45+ minutes after the meeting. The subject of content theft came up when Brooke Barmy asked the question, “What is being done about the increase in marketplace copybot accounts, the reasoning behind not banning on the first offense, the reasoning behind not IP banning and the reasoning behind not taking [confiscating] the money back to Linden Lab? Brooke is the Coordinator & PR [Director?] for, per his profile. His rez-day is in 2005, older than me and his avatar didn’t even creak or anything () Obviously he is in content sales and has a vested interest in the subject. He asks a reasonable but surprisingly uninformed question. I find, surprisingly, some of those at the meeting are also way uninformed or misinformed about the law, content protection measures, and certainly philosophy and ethics. I found the discussion particularly annoying. So my response is this article. Probably a bit long as I am adding in parts of the foundation for debate I found missing from the in-world conversation. Then I’ll get to the ‘why’ of what will and won’t work. Privacy An avatar or two has been masked in the video. I am aware of the vigilantism in SL and RL. We have a number of social issues people are coping with. So, no point in enabling the self- unaware haters that will want to kill/injure anyone with a diversity of thought. Basis for Decisions First, philosophy. Depending on how one defines the first records of philosophy it has been with us in a recorded fashion since 2600± BC when the Sumerian king Shuruppak wrote life advice, called wisdom literature, to his son. Something along the line of not making decisions after drinking beer. The oldest designated philosopher is Thale, 624-549 BC, pre-Socrates. If you think philosophy is for ONLY the eggheads, I think you are unlikely to ever be able to rationally live with the problem of theft. Until the late 20 th-century philosophy was the cutting-edge technology. If you can’t think it, how can you deal with it, learn, or manipulate a thing? In ancient times people were all about getting to rational thought and moving away from emotional chaos. Pretty much the opposite of today’s propaganda stream moving people to make emotional decisions that are easily manipulated. Philosophy is the foundation of our laws and sense of justice. Without a solid foundation and understanding of philosophy, people tend to go with whatever sounds good at the moment. Control of emotional, non-thinking, philosophically deficient masses is much easier. In philosophically deficient cases things are decided situation by situation, which is named situational ethics versus principle based ethics. Each event is a MAJOR decision process dependent on people’s mood. Greek philosophers were figuring out the nature of things and behaviors to create a more AWARE, THINKING, and PROGRESSIVE society. One that does not understand or have a philosophy cannot understand how the world and humans work. It is sort of that thing about ‘those that don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’ And since from history we have learned we don’t learn from history (though that last sentence is self-refuting, you probably get the idea) we are pretty much doomed. But, we can at least choose choices that are philosophically smart to avoid repeating the dumber, more painful mistakes. We can choose to learn from history. Philosophy gives us the framework to rise above situational ethics and extends our thinking to higher level considerations. We have a framework to avoid the stupid mistakes like, stop hate speech oops, just killed free speech. More pages, links below.
